Kuja (Mars) - The army chief! - Part1

Hello all,

Namaste! (Namah (नमः )-bow, Te (ते )-to your soul, or I give respects to your soul). Hope all of you had a wonderful week where you worked a little more towards capturing your true and authentic Self. Last week we discussed how we can capture the realm of true greatness by working on our personal Dharma. How about this week we switch gears and go back to some vedic astrology and mythology? This week let us discuss another Graha (in very loose terms, planetary energy) called Kuja or Mars or Mangala according to Mythology and next week we will discuss more from a vedic astrological perspective.

Kuja is known as the soldier among the Grahas, but I would like to put his in the suit of an army chief. If Kuja in a horoscope can capture his true energy he is the army chief in its true sense. The person who comes to mind is General Colin Powell. A person with true Mars energy in its highest form shows the attitude and stature of an army general. But in its lower form, it can also show anger, arrogance and physical force. A true leader doesn't have to use physical force, the power they encase will reflect in their eyes and with that eyes itself they can project their stature.

One thing we need to understand is that the planet itself is not sitting in the horoscope, but it is that particular flavor of energy that comes into our life by virtue of the position of the planet in the horoscope. Every emotion if we analyze finally in a Science scenario comes down to atoms, molecules, and vibration and according to the vibration they possess, the energy can manifest differently. The same nuclear fission can be used to make a hydrogen bomb or to generate electricity. So the energy of a Graha in the horoscope is a mere tool in our hand. How to use it is our free will and choice. But many times the choice we can access can be limited according to our Karma we ourselves have brought on ourselves.

Now to Kuja. He is the army chief in the horoscope. Wherever he sits in the natal horoscope he brings vital energy, passion, and strategy. He can manifest in a horoscope in the higher or lower vibration. In the higher vibration it manifests as leadership, strategy, and vision; but in the lower forms, it is uncontrolled anger, physical force, and arrogance. What is Passion? The same energy when controlled and channeled towards one direction to create something, it is called passion and when it is uncontrolled and spreads in every direction it is called anger. So anything controlled and channeled can be used positively. A controlled nuclear reaction creates electricity and the same uncontrolled nuclear reaction is a weapon of mass destruction. So how can we use the power of Kuja towards our higher purpose? Before that let us delve into some Mythology associated with Mars as that makes it more easier to capture the true spirit of Kuja.

Mythology: We just discussed Kuja as the army chief among the Grahas. Each Graha brings the energy of some Mythological God or divine into the chart (As I am comfortable with Hindu Mythology, the Gods I discuss here, would be from the Indian Mythology. Hopefully someday I would be knowledgeable enough about Greek or Egyptian mythology ;-)). In Hindu Mythology, the Gods Shiva and Parvathy has a son called Karthikeya or Subramanya or Muruga. He is considered the army chief of the Gods. The planet Kuja encompasses the energy of Karthikeya.

Shiva and Parvathi according to Mythology have two sons. The elder one is the elephant-faced God, Ganesha and the younger one is Karthikeya. Karthikeya was born as six sparks from Shiva's eyes and they took the form of six divine children in six lotuses in a lake called Saravana. Later six girls called 'Karthika ladies' took each child and brought them up (In mythology also there were nannies or au pairs ;-)). Once the six babies grew up to be young children, Shiva took the six children made them into one person with six faces. Hence Karthikeya is also called Shanmugha (person with six faces). These six faces can also be taken as qualities of leadership, strategy, vision, passion, management, and direction or any number of the qualities that represent a leader.

Karthikeya has a spear that has the symbol of 'Om' and a flag and that holds the symbol of a peacock. There is a story behind the symbol of 'Om' on the spear. As many of you know 'Om' (ॐ ) is the symbol of Brahman or the eternal truth. Karthikeya's father Shiva is considered as the truth incarnate or Brahman in his higher forms. When Karthikeya was a young boy of six to seven years old, it seems he revealed the meaning of Brahman or the eternal truth to his father, the Brahman incarnate. Because Karthikeya revelated the secret of eternal truth to the 'Brahman Incarnate' or in other words Swami (The divine itself), Karthikeya is called Swaminatha (Swami-Divine, Natha- Master) or Master of the divine. Here this story shows Karthikeya was already enlightened at a very young age.

Later when Karthikeya had to go to war against two Asuras or demons called Taraka and Surapadma (reason for his birth in the first place), his mother Parvathy gave him a spear with 'Om' etched on it to bring in the power of his wisdom for eternal truth as well as the power of Shiva the eternal truth himself. Of course, Parvathi also wanted him to win the war, so she infused her energy (or in other words Shakthi or energy itself, Shakthi is also another name for Parvathy) as well in the spear and the spear is called  Shakthivel (Shakthi-energy, Vel-spear).

Now Karthikeya has the symbol of a peacock in his flag. Let me narrate a small story where the peacock played a part. Once the sage Narada ( who likes to start fights among Gods), visited Kailasa, the abode of Shiva and Parvathi. Of course, Narada had to start some fight. He had brought a sacred Mango (I say here as Mango, it could have been any sacred heavenly fruit) with him to give and now there are two kids, Ganesha and Karthikeya. Like any household, both kids wanted the Mango. Narada said as it was a divine Mango and holds the wisdom, it should not be cut into half and has to be eaten whole. Now both Ganesha and Karthikeya started fighting (Kids! I am shaking my head in humor) and wanted the whole Mango.

Then Narada himself kept a competition. He said, whoever goes around the three worlds of heaven, earth, and the lower realm three times (remember, they are Gods, so competition also comes in massive proportions, Lol!) and comes back first will get the Mango. Now Karthikeya has the vehicle of Peacock while Ganesha's vehicle is a mouse. So Karthikeya becoming a bit egotistic laughed and made fun of (Mars energy in its lower form) Ganesha and said, " I have my Peacock. I will go fast around the world and come back in a jiffy". And off he went in his Peacock.

Now Ganesha became sad as he had the mouse as his vehicle, which is an extremely slow transport and looked at Narada woefully. Ganesha is considered the God of wisdom and brains in Mythology. So Narada asked Ganesha, "What is the meaning of this world"? Then Ganesha answered, "The Brahman". Then Narada asked again who is the appeared form of Brahman and Ganesha said- "My parents, Shiva and Parvathi". Here I want to elaborate that, Shiva is considered the hidden potential (Shiva) and Parvathi are considered the energy to mold the hidden potential (Shakthi). So now Narada looked at Ganesha with a glint in his eyes. Suddenly it struck Ganesha and he kept his hands pressed in the 'Namaste' posture went around Shiva and Parvathi three times.

Here as Shiva and Parvathi are considered Brahman or the whole Universe itself, going around them means metaphorically traversing the whole world itself. Now our Karthikeya was jet-setting around the world in his peacock at this time. By the time Karthikeya finished the three rounds, Ganesha had already finished going around his parents and bowed to his parents and went and got the Mango from Narada. When Karthikeya returned Ganesha was munching his sweet Mango. Now Karthikeya became terribly angry at the atrocity of him going all around the world while Ganesha got the Mango just by going around their parents. He became upset with his parents and went and sat on a hill called Pazhani in Tamilnadu. There is a beautiful temple in 'Pazhani' for Karthikeya. Just a note, Kuja placed good in a horoscope can bring anger towards injustice, though here truly injustice didn't happen.

To remind people of not becoming egotistical, the symbol of the peacock is etched on Karthikeya's flag. Now, peacock even though beautiful is considered an arrogant bird due to its showing off the beautiful feathers and the sound it makes. The Universe many times speak to us in symbols. Hence symbols are important in Mythology. So planetary energies sometimes don't even leave the Gods, so what to say about humans?

Analysis:  Now let us analyze Mars using the example of Karthikeya. Karthikeya is considered the army chief of the Gods in Hindu Mythology and same way Kuja is considered the army chief of the Grahas. The army chief is the person who guides an entire army through a war. To win the war, the soldiers need to believe in their leader. For that, the person should have the leadership to guide the army, strategy to lead the war through all the stages and vision to foresee the result of the war. There is no place for anger, frustration or self-doubt if the war has to be won. This war we can also consider as the literal war, a war like scenario in business or if we take our mundane life, experiences as the war.

Whether to win a war, business or even in life itself, we need the wisdom of a leader, the strategy of an army chief and the vision of an executive. Kuja in the best position as Karthikeya blesses us in these avenues. Kuja also gives the vitality or energy as the spear called Shakthi gives. The leader also needs the wisdom, which is symbolized by the 'Om' etched on the spear.  From the story of Karthikeya as Swaminatha, we can come to the conclusion that a true leader needs to be wise and knowledgeable as well. When information churned in the ocean of the mind with the knowledge of experiences becomes true wisdom. So mind you, information, knowledge, and wisdom are three different things. Now even after all these, a leader can become arrogant and egotistical.

Once a person is egotistical his leadership, as well as vision, goes down as ego takes over and the inner voice of the divine gets neglected or masked (Remember the story of Duryodhana in Mahabharata, even though he was a true leader and well knowledgeable, his grand ego brought him down). Such a leader is not respected by his followers. To give this warning a peacock is etched on Karthikeya's flag that announces the arrival of a leader, but the peacock stays in the flag than showing its arrogance around. Another symbolism we can consider is Peacock is the vehicle of Karthikeya. He goes around on Peacock and the bird carries him so that the bird is controlled by Karthikeya. If we consider the Peacock as our Ego, we are supposed to control our Ego as Karthikeya, the divine being who is existing as our Soul. At that level, there is no place for ego, arrogance or showmanship. That is the area of leadership, vision, strategy, and foresight.

There is also another interpretation. In many of the images of Karthikeya, the peacock holds a snake in its claws. Here the snake can also be considered the ego and by virtue of our willpower symbolized by the peacock, we keep our ego in check. In Mythology, most of the times things are not literal but very much metaphorical.

Saravana Bhava: As Karthikeya was born in a lake called 'Saravana' his another name is Saravana as well. Remember he was born as six babies on six lotuses. Here again, the lotus denotes the higher form of knowledge or eternal truth and wisdom, which again symbolizes the wisdom Karthikeya encompassed. Another interpretation, the six sparks originated from the eyes of  Shiva, who himself is truth incarnate. A deeper level we can go further is, Shiva is considered to have three eyes and the third eye is considered the 'Ajna Chakra' or the eye of vision and foresight. So if the sparks came from his third eye, then the sparks are encompassed of the pure energy of vision, foresight and this also denotes Karthikeya at birth itself was made up of pure sparks of vision, foresight, and strategy.

Now in every Karthikeya or Muruga temple in south India, it will be written on the top of the temple 'Om, Saravana Bhava'. People chant this term and ask for blessings of Karthikeya. Let us analyze now the esoteric meaning. Is it just to bow down to Saravana and ask for his blessings or is there more to it?

Of course, by now we all know 'Om'(ॐ) stands for the Brahman or the divine and invoking brings the blessings of the divine. In Sanskrit, (शरवण भव - Saravana Bhava), Saravana means Karthikeya and Bhava means to become. So Saravana Bhava literally means 'Become Karthikeya'. So here the wording 'Saravana Bhava' is not asking us to bow down to God and pray to him for our prosperity, instead, Karthikeya is asking us to invoke the divine and then become the divine itself and create our prosperity standing in that true power of being divine. He says,"Not just bow to me, instead become me and create your reality". We have many times discussed that 'our thoughts create our reality'. When we ourselves become divine, we encompass all the divine qualities of leadership, strategy, vision, honesty, compassion, energy and vitality. By being Saravana himself we capture the true essence of Kuja (Just a note, many times these interpretations come to my mind as intuition, which later I analyze for more clarity ;-)).

Kuja in its highest form of vibration encompasses the divine nature of Karthikeya who was ready to go to war against the Asuras, Taraka and Surapadma, lead an army as an army chief, have the willpower to go three times around the world to get the sacred Mango, embody the boldness to fight with his parents for the injustice of not getting the Mango even after finishing his feat and have the kindness and compassion to bless his devotees to 'become himself'. Isn't it awesome to embody the energy of Kuja as Karthikeya?

Now, will everyone get to be Karthikeya by virtue of the position of Kuja in the horoscope? Maybe not. For that Kuja has to be placed in a good house with benefic aspects on it and almost no malefic aspects. The same Kuja, if have the aspects of Surya (Sun) or Rahu, can become extremely egotistical. But we can indeed bring the benefic energy of Kuja by becoming a true leader to our family (especially siblings and cousins as one of Kuja's signification is siblings and cousins) and friends, being bold to take good decisions for ourselves and the greater good and have the foresight, strategy, and vision to win the war of life with an attitude like Karthikeya. We will discuss more of the astrological aspects of Kuja in the next post.

So let us all embody the concept of 'Saravana Bhava' in its truest sense and with the blessings of the divine, become Saravana himself to capture our leadership, willpower, boldness, foresight, strategy, and vision to take our life to the higher echelons of authenticity or true Self. 'Om Saravana Bhava'!

I wish you a good weekend and I'll see you next Friday! 😉

Next week: Kuja - The army chief!-Part 2

Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance ; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried".
