The lonely being!
Hello all,
Namaste! Hope this week, all of you were able to take the key called 'will power' and unlock the treasures of your own mind for capturing the highest peak of your own life. We have discussed a lot about how our mind can become our biggest friend as well as our worst enemy if we are not careful. Today let us discuss another aspect that is becoming worldwide nowadays. This is a side effect of the modern world. It is slowly creeping up everywhere without our knowledge.
Loneliness! Some six months back two features on the paper Washington Post caught my attention. One was about Japan and the other was about Europe. In Japan, people have dedicated their lives to work culture. The career life is so busy many times people have not to time to marry and have a family. It seems after work life people in the middle or late middle age are finding themselves alone living in an apartment. Many times if somebody dies even the neighbors are not becoming aware of their death.
An industry has grown around this fact. People who are there to come and clean up the body remains and later make the apartment/home livable for the next tenant or owner. Think about that being who had been living there and who passed away without even anyone's knowledge. Someone who had nobody to talk to, to interact, no family and nobody to care for. Isn't that a very lonely existence? Here are the two features on Japan.
Now, about the west. Many parts of Europe and the U.S. are every year under cold and winter weather for more than six months. Hope all of you have heard about the biological clock. The biological clock is an internal rhythm in humans that works on the basis of Sunlight. It is called the 'circadian rhythm'. According to the Sun and it's rays, the body produces wake and sleep hormones that keep the body in a healthy sleep-wake cycle. So, for this, the Sun is very much needed.
What happens in the northern parts of Europe and the USA, During winter many times the Sun is not visible for a major part of six months. The Sunlight that is needed to keep this rhythm going is only available at rare times. The stimulation that produces the sleep-wake hormones is taken out of the picture. The hormones are released haphazardly. The sleep-wake cycle is disrupted. The person starts to feel like a zombie. Sleep is needed for a healthy, wakeful, sharp mind to function. Now, the mind which was working well until now becomes the person's biggest enemy.
The mind: As the saying goes, 'An idle mind is a devil's workshop'. So, here the mind not being working properly can bring in ideas, inklings, and thoughts that are not good for the person itself. It is considered that there may be an increase in suicide in the west during the winters and even in spring when the effect of winter is actually reducing. Above that add loneliness as well to the mix. It becomes an epidemic that becomes an undercurrent in the society. So, why are people trying to take their own lives?
Here, let me give an example. Anthony Bourdain. The famous chef who had his own travel show on CNN that was syndicated in his own name. He was doing his sixteenth season during his death. He had everything going for him, whether it was his career, name, fame, wealth, going to places or having interaction with people and culture. He was living his purpose and making a great life out of it. Even with all this why did he take his own life? I used to be a big fan of his show. Above the food, I used to enjoy the places and culture he used to show through his episodes. What pushed him to take his own life? I could not wrap my head around that fact for the next month.
It is said that 'At the top, it is very lonely'. Even though Bourdain was able to bring out the spark in everyone who came along in his life, maybe nobody was able to see the 'deep inner spark' of life and living he had within him. Maybe nobody was able to see the depth and give him company from a core or a soul level. We would never know. The world just lost a hugely talented person who showed us how you can take one's own creativity and turn it into a beautiful piece of art (Television show) and share it with the world. He inspires me every day with his work and talents. May his soul rest in peace.
Modern life: Let us look at what is contributing to this deep loneliness. Today the world is connected so much. You want to reach out to someone in India, it would only take a second to send a Whatsapp message or a FB message. Need to listen to someone's voice, it may take a few seconds to place a phone call. I remember the days when I had to call my parents from my hostel during my college days. I had to go to the nearest phone booth, call a family friend's house. My father or mother would come and wait at their place. Again after 15 minutes, I would call to talk to my parents. That is how it used to be.
But now, everyone has a phone or a mobile, that can be used to keep in touch, interact, share videos, photos, news, memes, latest gadgets, paraphernalia and more. It is possible in a second. People are interacting everywhere through social media, the internet. television, videos. and through every communication channel available. Leaders and influencers are talking about 'communication as the key' for everything. Even here through this post, I am communicating with my dear readers. So. everyone is communicating, the whole world is communicating. But even then why people are feeling lonelier and becoming islands in a sea of people?
Lonely being: Why people are becoming lonely beings, trapped within the island of their mind, always thinking, trying to make a sense of life? Many times finding they really don't know what life is, why things are happening to them and how to find a foothold in this unending deluge of experiences that are coming knocking at their door. The side effects of the fast paced living we live, dazzled by the gimmicks, gadgets and niceties of the modern world. Why are people with every comfort they know, leave everything behind and go in search of an Asrama or hermitage? Why are westerners flocking to India in search of the mystical and magical touch of India? Why are people finding solace in drugs, alcohol and other vices? Why?
Even here in the USA, why are people going in search of drum circles, native American cultures or the cultures of the Amazon forest or South America? Why are people not happy in the circumstances they find themselves and not taking charge of their own life? What are they searching for? Why are they feeling lonely and not feeling connected to anything?
Because first, they have lost their connection with themselves. That is the eternal search they are doing. To find themselves. For that they search everywhere in the world, to find that connection that keeps them rooted and happy in their own life. We have discussed the sacred chakras, before. Our body has seven chakras. This is within the body. But in actuality, there are nine chakras. One below our body, in the ground we stand on wherever we are and one above our head, some few inches above the crown chakra, Sahasrara.
So, what does this mean? It means we are eternally connected with the space we stay and with the Universe itself. We are supposed to be conduits for the wisdom and energy that come from the Universe, that pass through our chakras and later pass out into the Earth. So, like a tree, our roots should be solidly deeply embedded in the Earth and our mind or the crown chakra should grow up like the tree to capture the eternal wisdom from the Universe. So, we should surrender to the divine wisdom and find our place within the greater space. This is the correct way to lead our life.
Modern human: But then what is the modern human doing? We have made the mind, the organ of perception that sits within our brain, between the ears and creates mental images for us, the biggest thing. That too, many times this mind has no connections to the upper three chakras. The Sahasrara, the crown chakra- the wisdom that comes from the Universe, the Ajna, third eye chakra- the vision for our own life and the Visuddhi, the throat chakra, the words that manifest as energy in our own life.
Now, the lower four chakras are needed to live a life of deep groundedness from where we can capture our purpose, energy, creativity and share that with the whole world through our deep compassion that is the gift of the heart chakra- Anahata. Without using any of these, we live a life purely from our mind, that brings every thought, inkling, attitude, and viewpoint there can be. So, is there any wonder many of us feel lost in our own life even with every modern gadget and paraphernalia that is humanly available. We have no connection to the world or the Universe and we become a buoy that just float around aimlessly through the ocean of life.
This is what the being, the lonely being is searching for. The deep connection to their own life that first waters their life, to blossom and fruit. Then that blooming, abundant 'tree of life', we have to share with our loved ones, others and the Universe itself. Such a life would brim with contentment, happiness, and joy. There would be no place to go and search. One becomes comfortable wherever life has placed them. Because 'the whole Universe' itself is represented in that 'tree of life'. The whole Universe exists in that tree of life. A much greater, grander existence!
Wishing every single human being on this planet, to find that 'tree of life' for their own life within themselves, live a grander existence and never become a lonely being, not connected with anything in this Universe! I would like to finish with a quote from the Iranian mystic and poet, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi- "You were born with wings. Why prefer to crawl through life?" So, Soar!
I wish you a good weekend and I'll see you next Friday!😉

Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance ; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried".
